That\u2019s called \u201cfound money.\u201d&nbsp;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you may never experience that same good fortune, take heart that you could have a hidden asset called &#8220;social capital&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, social capital is the value of <strong><em>other <\/em><\/strong>people in your life. &nbsp;Get ready to leverage this asset and use it both during and after your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/7-ways-to-stay-sane-in-your-executive-job-search\/\">job search<\/a>. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional\ncareer advice focuses on optimizing the value <em>you<\/em> bring an employer, because, after all, it\u2019s <em>you<\/em> who the company will be hiring. An\noften overlooked asset is the other people in your life who also bring value to\na prospective employer. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Tap Into the Value of Social Capital<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand what social capital means, consider that guy who \u201cknows everyone.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you hear that said about someone, you instantly understand the implication. This is clearly a person wielding power, a real influencer who just gets things done.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now imagine you can be equally as powerful.&nbsp; All it takes is a little understanding of why people need people.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start building your social capital by building your connections&nbsp; <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Acquire Assets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll encounter\nall types of people in your personal and professional life; some will prove\ninvaluable resources. &nbsp;No need to fill\nout an evaluation form to assess their worth, just be a keen observer of the value\nthey bring to your life. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, have you noticed a certain colleague who\u2019s a critical thinker?&nbsp; Maybe you\u2019ve gotten jammed on a project and this person offered help with her great analytical skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Hang on to smart people; problem solvers help resolve all sorts of things. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are your neighbors well connected and able to open doors? Share professional experiences with them and establish common ground. &nbsp;If you\u2019re interested in them, they\u2019ll be interested in you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe a work colleague always has great insights about employees&#8217; potential and could prove a sounding board as you explore future career moves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abandon any preconceived notions of who might be a good connection.&nbsp; Anyone can be a great networker, from a Receptionist . . . to the CEO . . . to your millennial nephew.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep an open mind, and then wisdom and assistance will flow back and forth. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Protect and Grow Assets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You certainly wouldn\u2019t leave your home unlocked or place investments in questionable funds, so why wouldn\u2019t you protect your social capital? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Secure those relationships and you\u2019ll be on your way to <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-do-i-rebuild-my-network-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"safeguarding a strong network (opens in a new tab)\">safeguarding a strong network<\/a>. &nbsp;Build equity by maintaining your connections on a regular basis, then enjoy the payoff over time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People notoriously overthink what it takes to keep and grow connections, so here are a few tips on how it works: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay in touch<\/li><li>Pick up the phone and call<\/li><li>Show up for face-to-face engagements wherever possible.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not about grand gestures; it\u2019s more about everyday human touches. Send timely responses when they reach out with questions, congratulate people on their achievements or milestones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s all about respecting what\u2019s important to them.&nbsp; Above all else, demonstrate a genuine interest in someone else\u2019s life if you expect them to reciprocate.&nbsp; &nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also\nimportant to recognize when it\u2019s time to move on.&nbsp; For a variety of reasons, people fall out of\nyour life, so don\u2019t rely only on past relationships; have a curiosity about who\nelse crosses your path and be open to new connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and a word about the numbers game people are tempted to play with online connections. &nbsp;&nbsp;A client told me (proudly) that he had 700 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"LinkedIn connections (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-many-linkedin-connections-are-good-for-executive-job-search\/\" target=\"_blank\">LinkedIn connections<\/a> and asked if I thought that was \u201cenough.\u201d&nbsp; When I inquired what he had done with those connections, he responded \u201c<em>What do you mean?<\/em>\u201d&nbsp; Guess I got my answer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diversify Your Portfolio<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers traditionally\njudge your worth based on KSAOs.&nbsp; These attributes\naddress human and intellectual capital. Companies take inventory of the\ncollective KSAOs and consider them their brain trust.&nbsp; You\u2019ll need to have those requisite\nattributes to get the job:&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Knowledge:<\/strong> You have a mastery of facts, generally in a specified subject matter<\/li><li><strong>Skills:<\/strong> You are proficient in a given area, e.g. engineering , finance, operations<\/li><li><strong>Abilities:<\/strong> You can demonstrate knowledge and skills via a mental or physical exercise<\/li><li><strong>Other:<\/strong> You have <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/toxic-executive-job-search-beliefs-personal-branding-not-for-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"attributes called \u201csoft skills\u201d (opens in a new tab)\">attributes called \u201csoft skills\u201d<\/a> e.g. reliability, multi-tasking, empathy, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can now\nadd the asset called social capital to your profile of offerings and here\u2019s how\nyou\u2019ll \u201cbring it\u201d to your next employer. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Liquidate Your Assets<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve shown\nyour individual net worth and now you\u2019re ready to cash in and add more value by\nsharing those \u201cpeople\u201d assets. &nbsp;Liquidation\nof those assets can take many forms including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Candidate Referrals:&nbsp; <\/strong>Employers pay fees of up to 30% of base salary through a\nsearch firm vs. a vetted candidate who you refer. Priceless!&nbsp; Pay close attention to job postings and be\nproactive about referring quality candidates.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vetted Vendors and Consultants: &nbsp;<\/strong>You may have led or participated in a team and spent hours on\nRequests for Proposals (RFPs), presentations and implementations.&nbsp; Your recommendations of quality providers can\nsave countless time and money to a company. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Acquire Teams with Industry\nKnowledge:&nbsp; <\/strong>I witnessed the hiring of an entire accounting\ndepartment following an acquisition where a critical mass was urgently needed. &nbsp;A hiring manager brought on a team from a\nformer employer in the same industry sector, allowing for a smooth and cost\neffective integration.&nbsp; Now that\u2019s social\ncapital at its best! &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Industry Leaders: &nbsp;<\/strong>You may have strong relationships with regulators who can cut through red tape, legislators who can advocate, experts who help interpret trends.&nbsp; They\u2019re willing to give free advice because you\u2019ve done the same for them.
