But with holding down a full time job and investing time in job search networking, how are they going to fit LinkedIn proactivity into their schedule?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice \u2013 Create a realistic schedule (say, a few hours a week) to focus on posting LinkedIn updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other ways to be proactive on <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-not-to-build-your-executive-network\/\">LinkedIn with networking<\/a> and keeping your brand top-of-mind. For instance, publishing articles, \u201ccold\u201d networking one-on-one, LinkedIn Group activities, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if your time is limited, posting updates may be the single best LinkedIn thing to focus on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Posting LinkedIn Updates vs. Updating Your LinkedIn Profile<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, a brief explanation of the distinction between <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/smart-personal-branding-posting-linkedin-updates-vs-updating-your-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"posting LinkedIn updates and updating your LinkedIn profile (opens in a new tab)\">posting LinkedIn updates and updating your LinkedIn profile<\/a>. They\u2019re not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Posting LinkedIn updates<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPosting an update\u201d means sharing something of interest about you or others in your LinkedIn updates feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your update feed is visible in the center column of your profile, each time you log into your LinkedIn account. As of this writing, you post an update by clicking on the content in the block that appears at the very top of the center column. This action is also called \u201csharing an update\u201d, \u201can activity update\u201d and \u201cupdating your status\u201d, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Updating your LinkedIn profile<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUpdating your LinkedIn profile\u201d means editing or changing the content in the various sections of your LinkedIn profile \u2013 Headline, Summary, Experience, Education, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Posting LinkedIn Updates is Such a Good Thing for Job Search<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Posting updates regularly and meaningfully helps you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stay top of mind with people who can help you meet your career goals<\/li><li>Promote your <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/personal-brand-buzzkill-snarky-comments-on-linkedin-pulse\/\">personal brand<\/a><\/li><li>Demonstrate your subject matter expertise<\/li><li>Showcase your industry knowledge<\/li><li>Increase visibility to your profile (and therefore to you)<\/li><li>Demonstrate that you&#8217;re social media savvy, an important trait these days.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your LinkedIn Updates Strategy Should Have a 2-Pronged Approach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn updates can be approached in several ways, as seen below. A personal <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/5-reasons-your-personal-brand-loves-linkedin\/\">branding and networking<\/a> communications plan can be built to incorporate the two prongs of LinkedIn updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[<em>For all of my suggestions in the 2 prongs, use relevant hashtags and tag people before you post the update, whenever applicable.<\/em>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use updates in these two ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) React to other people\u2019s updates with comments, shares, likes and other reactions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Share other people\u2019s relevant updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>First, follow people whose radar you want to be on, and those who work at your target companies. After that, view their updates in your LinkedIn stream. Share the ones that will be relevant to your network and\/or the people you want to be visible to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Comment on other people\u2019s relevant updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, when you see a relevant update by someone else, take a few moments to leave a meaningful comment. Write a comment that positions your subject matter expertise. You want something more than \u201cGreat article\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Like or otherwise react to other people\u2019s relevant updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the simplest and most time-saving <a href=\"https:\/\/executivecareerbrand.com\/how-to-network-on-linkedin-like-a-pro\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"229\">LinkedIn update tactic<\/a>. Some may be obvious, often-used strategies.
